Centerpiece of the Month: December

What is COTM?

Centerpiece of the Month.

I started it over a year ago, because I enjoy setting the center of the table as much as I love delivering scrumptious food around it. And I figured there were others out there who felt the same way.

I handed the reigns of COTM over to Sandi at the Whistlestop because my year just kept bowling me over (more the hard flying ball variety than a bowl full of cherries). Mind you, I am grateful for the fullness of this past year, the triumphs, trials and tribulations all wrapped into one rolling bowling—or perhaps snow—ball, but find that whether things are busy and great or busy and bad, it can be wise to let things drop off your plate.

So Sandi took over the chewing; in other words, I bit off more than I could chew, I pushed the ‘too much’ over the edge of my plate and she willingly brought a fork to help a friend.

So jump over and visit her, to find some fun centerpieces and monthly inspiration. Sometimes these events (online food and other events such as hosting a roundup of centerpieces every month) stay on one site—have one home. But in other cases they travel from site to site or blog to blog and you play a little game of hide and seek to discover where they are.

I imagine COTM will stay with Sandi awhile, but there is a chance it will travel, so keep your eye out. Traveling events sometimes means more people see them and participate, or in my case, it means the originator of the event takes a breather.

So Sandi has the bite (remember ‘I bit off more than I can chew’?) aka baton aka beautiful centerpieces on her site for the time being. The pictures above are two contributions of mine for the beginning of December. The candy canes came out over this weekend; they make a quick, inexpensive centerpiece. Consider throwing them into a glass vase with straight sides—stuff as many in a row as you can—or into another favorite Christmas vase or votive. The cake speaks for itself. It was the center of attention at a party I recently attended; I thought the photo looked a bit like a magazine cover, it just needs juicy article titles and literary hooks with page numbers attached…

Holidays are a great time to experiment with your table tops, my next might include a trifle full of globe-like ornaments… what’s on your table?
